One of my favorite Gospel Rap artist is Jessica Mechell. She writes/raps about her love for God and how she overcame many obstacles in her past. These obstacles help build the foundation for the woman that she is today. She also focuses on learning how to love and grow with God while thanking him at the same time. She uses her testimony to help others overcome rough times in their life while always remembering to give The God that she speaks of praise.
I had the opportunity to interview Jessica and find out what sparked the idea behind her Agape Love EP
1. What does Agape Love mean to you?
Agape is a Greek word often used to describe God’s unconditional love for us. It’s the highest form of love. It’s because of his unwavering love for us, God sent his son Jesus to die for our sins.
2. What is your favorite song on the EP?
Lift your name is my favorite. It describes my highs and lows, my conversations with God and my determination to understand my purpose. It’s one of my slowest tracks, and the first song i started singing on.
3. Growing up did you ever see yourselfbeing a Christian rapper (artist)?
No, i started rapping at the age of 11 after listening to my aunt rap and discovering her lyric book. I became enthusiastic about music and started using a tape recorder to record my songs. I was introduced to a great mentor Keyz while in Japan and he taught me the ropes of becoming an entertainer. I recorded in the music Studio, was featured on a commercial promoting term curfew through a rap and attended talent shows.
I eventually stopped writing, because i felt something was missing. There was nothing
Unique about my sound. 11 years later, i rekindled my passion and started rapping about Christ. I use my music to share my testimony and minister to others.
4. What has been your biggest challenge music wise?
My biggest challenge has been finding myself and finding ways to reach a wider audience. I constantly have to remind myself to seek the Kingdom first and the rest will follow. This means using music as a ministry to spread the gospel and trusting that God will open more doors for my music so that it can become a full time ministry.
5. What do you want the listener to take away or learn after listening to Agape Love?
I want listeners to understand that no one is perfect. It doesn’t matter what you have done in your past. He’s just waiting for you to call on him and invite him into your life before it’s too late. I also want people to feel my journey and know that if God can deliver me, he can deliver you.
6. Who is your favorite Christian artist?
Mary Mary. Erica Campbell from Mary Mary is how I felt inspired to start rapping. I listened to, I Luh God and became motivated to start back rapping.
7. What do you think about the music outside of the Christian genre?
Music is beautiful, but it’s also an opening to invite harmful things into our life. I recommend listening to positive, uplifting music versus negative, sexually explicit, violent, and crude language. If you are struggling with addiction, sexual immorality, abuse or other conditions then it’s not helpful listening to music with lyrics that promotes that type of lifestyle.
