Does ISSA RAE’s INSECURE speak to your inner Black Girl

I have been a follower of Issa Rae’s work since her Awkward Black Girl days on youtube (that wasn’t her first series but it was the series that made me fall in love with her personality) While many of you may not have heard of Awkward Black Girl there are thousands of us who have and relate with what Issa elaborates on in her show. The fact that HBO gave a black woman her own show, produced and directed by black women. This is huge and we are making moves (does happy dance and throws in a twerk…..ayeeee we on the come up)

If you have some free time and nothing to do you should definitely check out Awkward Black Girl . It’s somewhat low budget, but Issa is still the same ole Issa and definitely brings her black girl humor along with her rhymes.

Now on to the greatness that is INSECURE. Insecure is Issa Rae’s new show on HBO starring herself and gosh do I love this show and everything about it. First off, the show is centered around a Black millennial who’s basically trying to find her way in life. She’s in a relationship with her boyfriend Lawrence, who starts off as being unemployed because he is chasing some dream of developing then next big app. Lawrence  accepts a job at best buy which is considered beneath him being that he is a Georgetown graduate. Eventually he gets a job with a tech company. But things kind of go downhill in their relationship ( I’m not going to spoil it for yall who are late to the party).

Issa does not act as if she has all of her shit together and that’s what I love most about her. She shows her flaws, her insecurities, her self doubt, her confusion, and her ability to admit that she’s still trying to figure out this thing called life. She reminds me of myself. She reminds me of my friends. She reminds me of the average black girl/woman. love the relationship that she has with her best friend Molly “first of all where did they get this name from, what blak girl name Molly do yall know”. Now I know there might be a few out there but yeah that name caught me completely off guard. Anyways there relationship is so raw and open. They literally hold nothing back.

Finally, I  love the relationship that she has with her best friend Molly “first of all where did they get this name from, what black girl name Molly do yall know”. It is always so great to have friends who you can talk to about anything.

The show is roughly 30 mins, and that is definitely not enough to satisfy my appetite for the show. I will say that I think the first season of INSECURE was an absolute success. Issa girl can we please get an hour long show. From the raves and reviews, you can see that we thirsting for more, so give the people what they want and do not keep us waiting long for season 2. Additionally congratulations Issa on the success of this first season, you made a show with substance, that so many black women can relate to and I appreciate that. We do not get to see ourselves represented as much as we should be on tv so I am thankful for the shows like Insecure that gives us a voice.

I’ll leave yall with some videos of these awesome ladies. Make sure you watch the show, and tell your friends and their friends to watch the show.
