Girls Trip “Movie Review”

One of the most amazing feelings in this world is having phenomenal women in your life. These friends are there for you through thick and thin and will always have your back. This type of love can be seen in the movie “Girls Trip” starring Queen Latifah (Dana Elaine Owens), Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall, and the newbie Tiffany Haddish.

The four ladies Sasha (Queen Latifah – The GOSSIP) Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith – The MOM) Ryan ( Regina Hall – The BOSS), and Dina ( Tiffany Haddish – The WILD ONE) are lifelong friends who met while attending college at Florida A&M University.

Over the years the ladies have had disputes and somewhat grew a part from one another. Ryan comes up with the idea to reunite after 5 years with her sisters at the annual Essence Music Festival in New Orleans where their lives are changed, friendships are rekindled, and a marriage is shaken up.

This movie is one that you must not see alone. I almost saw it alone because I decided to stay in Columbia premiere night while all my friends left town but thankfully my girl Nicole came out with me to bond and laugh the night away. Which is exactly what we did the majority of the movie thanks to Tiffany Haddish.

This chick seriously brought all the (FUNNIES) to this movie and I seriously can not get enough of her and that vulgar sense of humor. She seriously is the one who gives life to her group of friends and the movie itself. The movie is rated R and that is mainly thanks to Tiffany. Her personality and humor gives the movie a sense of realness and highlights just how some of us may talk to our girlfriends about life, family, and sex. She holds nothing back and has no problem expressing how she truly feel.

Now when it comes to which of the ladies I relate to, I would say I can relate to RYAN the most. I feel like a BOSS and am focused on achieving what could possibly be considered as perfection. I want to write a book someday and I aim to achieve the level of success where my life can inspire others. Looking at the other characters I can also see myself as Sasha since I am a blogger, but I like to stay away from the celebrity gossip unless it’s any and everything dealing with Beyonce. I also have a little bit of Dina within me when you compare me to my college girls. I’m the wild and loud one in the bunch but with my friends outside of college not so much, my college friends are somewhat calm compared to all my other friends.
During the movie, there were some scenes that drastically stood out to me such as the pep talk Ryan gave herself before she gave her Keynote speech at Essence. She recited, “I am strong, I am beautiful, I am powerful.” She was basically trying to hype herself up which I see nothing wrong with doing. Sometimes as Black women we need to be reminded that we are indeed awesome because there are many times throughout the average day that the world tells us otherwise.

Okay yall I had SET IT OFF flashbacks during this movie as well. There is a scene where the ladies are wearing colorful wigs and sunglasses in the club. The ladies are dancing and the camera zooms in on Queen and Jada and instantly I thought of Cleo and Stoney robbing the bank.

If you do not get this reference I’m going to need for you to go watch the movie SET IT OFF please and thank you. Outside of the set if off vibes the wig dance off scene was everything especially the dancing in particular.  I loved the old school versus the new school. It’s odd that I’m referring to the 90s as old school but compared to the 20-year difference it is somewhat kind of old.

Okay moving on to the MEN, yall know every movie, especially Black movies has to have a little bit of eye candy, well Kofi Siriboe  (originally from Queen Sugar) gave us all the chocolate candy we needed throughout Girls Trip. The cast member that was so lucky to get to kiss all up on Black America’s favorite tv hottie was Mrs. Jada. I wonder if Will felt some type of way about this match up. Kofi was looking absolutely delectable throughout the movie especially during the grape fruit scene.

The last scene I feel the need to highlight is the infamous GRAPEFRUIT scene with Dina. Yall she went in on that grapefruit and banana, and that is all I will leave you with. You can use your imagination to figure out the rest.

Girls Trip is so good that I will be going to see it for a second time next weekend when I am home in Alabama. I got to get these laughs in with my sister Erica and my BAMA Besties back home in Mobile. Make sure you guys watch, support, and be ready to laugh until your stomach hurts.
