I recently introduced my readers to a song entitled “Feidin Santana” by MRG which recounts the shooting of Walter Scott from the perspective of Santana, who caught the incident on his video phone. MRG recently signed to Westvilla Music , just released his debut single, “Bet.”
In “Bet”, MRG raps about knowing he is destined for great things and that even if things are rough at the moment you can “Bet” on the fact that he will still come out on top. He also pays homage to NYC, also known as the Big Apple, and shouts out his hometown of Queens. “Bet” is a complete switch up from Feidin Santana and I am so here for it. MRG’s artistic diversity is on full display. He is rapping simultaneously about his own struggle and his present environment. DJ Mostwanted mixed and mastered the track and is also responsible for engineering “Ooouuu” and “Eat” both by Young M.A. “Bet” is now available for your listening pleasure on Soundcloud, Spotify, and Tidal,
Check out my interview with MRG below!
Lela Victoria: Who in the music industry inspires you?
MRG: J. Cole, simply because he does not care about what people think about him. I also like Kanye West, even though he and J. Cole are complete opposites. Kanye is more of a people pleaser.
Lela Victoria: What story do you want to tell with your music?
MRG: I want it to be about my life, political views and how I feel about what is going on in the world around me. I want my music to be a reflection of myself.
Lela Victoria: You released a powerful track called “Feidin Santana”, which tells the story of the shooting death of Walter Scott. Why did you feel the need to tell the story of Walter Scott?
MRG: The fact that something like that could go on today is literally shocking. I wanted to bring attention to what went on. I eventually want to release a music video that will have an impact on the system.
Lela Victoria: When are you releasing your first EP?
MRG: Summer 2017.
Lela Victoria: What artist would you like to collaborate with in the future?
MRG: I’d love to work with J Cole. Also, I have a lot of respect for 070Shake an up and coming rapper from New Jersey. I really respect her sound. If I had to pick one producer it’d be Swizz Beats.
Lela Victoria: Where do you see your music career in 5 years?
MRG: On tour, making a living from my music, it’s my passion. In five years, I’d hope to be on my third album, and it’d be great to go gold.
Lela Victoria: That wizard Kelly line in “Bet” had me cracking up! Did you watch the Proud Family growing up?
MRG: Yes, I did! I can’t believe you caught that!
Overall I enjoyed the interview with MRG. He was very laid back and very relatable. I enjoyed his perspective on life and his love for his music and his respect for other artists’ music, too. I admire the fact that he has no problem with using his music to highlight injustice while also possessing the capability to make fun music that we can sing and rap along to.
